Since I just took the time to explain what this glorious “Featured Articles” section is really all about, I figure it’s time to also pump out a brand new musical playlist. And that’s despite the fact that I’ve managed to accumulate zero alone time with my leather notepad; which was kind of the whole purpose behind the last playlist.
Note – I made a bet with my wife stating that I would not cut my hair until I finished my novel. Trust me, it’s getting long, and way out of hand. The next step is to obviously bargain for a trim if I am able to produce a few usable pages, right? Or, just write. I don’t know.
New tunes will hopefully get me in the mood…
“We All Need Saving” by Jon McLaughlin
“Quicksand” by Natalie Walker, featuring Thievery Corporation
“Sky” by Joshua Radin, featuring Ingrid Michelson
“Strawberry Swing” by Coldplay
“Don’t Let Me Fall” by Lenka
“Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” by She & Him
“An Eluardian Instance” by Of Montreal
”Half Asleep” by School of Seven Bells
“Canto de Ossanha” by Jurassic 5
Doesn’t it feel like momentum builds throughout the list? Wait, maybe I’m crazy? Well, I can say this, it’s easily the most eclectic bunch of songs I’ve chose thus far. But who’s kidding who, that’s what makes it fun. And I can’t take full credit for finding all of these. A friend, who will remain nameless, contributed more than one of these titles to my musical library, and for each and every contribution, I, of course, say thank you.

Yes! A new ten! Sorry if I sound giddy, but I really look forward to these. You have great musical taste. And thanks for explaining why they’re titled featured articles?! I didn’t get it but now I do! Straight to iTunes! Hmmm… What if you had a music player on here that played them while we read? How perfect would that be? Make it happen Hans! I know you can do it!
After looking at this list, I’m ready to hurl a big one!
Slip in some Slipknot, Linkin Park, Seether, and Foo Fighters. Schweeeeet!

On a serious note, keep plugging away at your novel. But at the pace you’re going, you may wanna negotiate for a Big George Roumain shave, and start afresh with your bet…
Billy,
The list is for writing, not for getting tattoos while simultaneously lifting weights. And please don’t use language that is offensive when posting comments. No one enjoys being forced into editing another person’s material.
Oh, just so you know, this is the 3rd time I’ve attempted to write my book.
The first attempt was hand written, while in Taiwan during 2001, and the manuscript mysteriously disappeared.
The second attempt was written on a MacBook and saved on an iPod, a cd, and a flash drive. All of them were stolen at the same time the day I returned from Australia in 2004 out of a friend’s car that was parked in San Diego while I was at a welcome home party. The thief thought he was getting a cd player out of the dash and instead got all of my earthly belongings in three separate bags.
I was absolutely certain my fate didn’t include any finished pieces of writing after the second catastrophe, but after attending a creative writing class in Florence, Italy with my mother in 2005, my faith in the written word was restored. I began writing for Spike Magazine, then DiG Magazine, then AVP.com, then Volleyball.com, and now this blog.
At the start of November, I began re-writing the book that has crossed my mind since the first day I heard the story, for a third time. It’s not easy to write a book. It takes more out of you, especially when you lose or have copies stolen from you, than you could ever possibly imagine.
The music that must be played inside the headphones that wrap around my ears cannot be any sort of hard, rock & roll. It must be mellow, and conducive to creating a certain type of mood. My book isn’t about motorcycle gangs or ultimate fighting.
And I never list more than one or two conventional bands that people have ever heard of. That’s not my point. My point is to find new artists that are actually artists, and then recommend them to other people who can possibly listen to them while appreciating how much time it takes to write something of significance.
Hans
Hey Hans,
Haha! I was just kidding about your picks, by the way! And sorry to hear about the writing hurdles you’ve faced. Best of luck with your book. Give it your best shot!
